Glenmore from The Lairig Ghru

After taking what I thought was my final shot at the start of the Lairig Ghru Pass, I turned around and saw the view back down the valley. I had overwhelming emotions at the beauty in front of me. The contrast of the snow-covered mountains around me and the way this was juxtaposed with the bare, uncovered Glenmore Forest in the distance, complimented by the blue sky and the array of diverse cloud formations.

Loch Gleann Dubh

Loch Gleann Dubh sits in front of the village Kylesku. Kylesku is now by-passed by the main road carried over the bridge, so blink and you'll miss it. The Loch sits at the centre of a 770 sq mile area which has become Scotland's first 'Global Geopark'. There is abundant wildlife and a wide range of outdoor pursuits in or on the lochs, mountains and white sandy beaches, including bird watching, seal and otter spotting, fishing, climbing and hill walking.

After spending many days over the years in Glencoe, during this trip with some help from google I realised I had never visited the most photographed waterfall in Scotland. So on the way back down South I had a 30 minute window to visit the waterfall. The weather wasn’t great and hit the mountain with a snowy mist.

Loch A' Chaorainn

This is the peaceful Loch A’ Chaorainn by the roadside on the way to Torridon. It’s an impounding reservoir. Unfortunately the wind changed whilst I was setting up my tripod and lost most of the reflection. The road to Torridon is really awesome, there aren’t many houses and it’s pretty desolate.

Full Winter In The Lairig Ghru

After leaving the car in Rothiemurcus, navigating the icy paths in the forest and breaching the snow line. I arrived at the start of the Lairig Ghru and it didn’t disappoint. I have used the pass in summer when coming down from various munros but had never seen the pass in winter. Historically the Lairig Ghru has been used simply as a route between Deeside and Strathspey. The Lairig Ghru has been a route used by many different people, for many different purposes. The full route from Aviemore to Braemar is about 43 km (27 mi), though many walkers cut the walk short by starting or finishing at Linn of Dee. The 8 km (5.0 mi) from there to Braemar is along a tarmac road.

This morning in Glen Affric was special. I planned to do the loop around the Loch Affric but due to the imminent snow I decided to cut it short, what a great decision that was! The road from Glen Affric to Drumnadrochit was covered in snow and completed an adventurous morning!!
