Burn O Vat, Aberdeenshire
Stumbling across the Burn O’Vat felt like I’d walked into a lush rainforest. The towering rock formations provided some welcome shade from the Scottish heat-wave ☀️ It is thought that Burn O’Vat was created around 14,000 years ago when a glacial ice sheet melted; the resulting meltwater carried boulders and rocks, which were deposited in the surrounding area.
One particular rock became lodged in a hollow; the meltwater which flowed around it eroded the river bed below, creating the giant pothole which is now one of Aberdeenshire’s lesser known gems.
