Etive Mor Waterfall

Arriving in Glen Etive, I realised there were no other cars parked near the waterfall which was a real surprise. I was hoping that I would be able to witness and photograph the red rising sunlight hitting the top of The Buachaille. Buachaille Eite Mor is located at the head of Glencoe and it’s pyramid shape makes it one of the most well known and special mountains in Scotland. I was delighted that everything came together and made the three hour drive before sunrise worth while!

Looking back down the valley in Glencoe, the pinky hues of sunrise were contrasting against the snow. It was a beautiful but moody morning down the valley.

I stumbled across The Ralston Cairn whilst searching for a good viewpoint back down the valley in Glencoe. The cairn is in memory of Ralson Claud who suddenly died on 10th January 2000. Glencoe was a place close to his heart and the cairn is a fitting tribute.

A frosty start over Loch Morlich. After an early start, once again I was on my way up a mountain for sunrise. Upon reaching the top and standing still for a while, I realised just how cold it was! As soon as the red sun hit the mountain in the distance, the fact my fingers were starting to go numb didn’t matter anymore!

The loch was completely frozen over, which is hardly surprising with the temperature being sub-zero for the previous week. The different thicknesses of ice and the shadows from the trees gave the surface of the loch its own unique pattern.

Wintery Lairig Ghru Pass

After leaving the car in Rothiemurcus, navigating the icy paths in the forest and breaching the snow line. I arrived at the start of the Lairig Ghru and it didn’t disappoint. I have used the pass in summer when coming down from various munros but had never seen the pass in winter. Historically the Lairig Ghru has been used simply as a route between Deeside and Strathspey. The Lairig Ghru has been a route used by many different people, for many different purposes. The full route from Aviemore to Braemar is about 43 km (27 mi), though many walkers cut the walk short by starting or finishing at Linn of Dee. The 8 km (5.0 mi) from there to Braemar is along a tarmac road.

On a trip to see the reindeer on The Cairngorm, I could see the snow being blown around the top of the ski runs!
